Stem cells are plastic cells that have the potential to develop into many different kinds of cells in the body during early development and growth. In the adults, stem cells help maintain adult tissue as response to normal tissue wear and damage. This uniqueness of stem cells is due to the following inherent properties: self renewal to maintain their number, and giving rise to differentiated progeny.

Owing to the same properties, stem cells hold great potential in the regeneration of healthy tissue for treatment of several diseases. Although there is widespread agreement over the potential therapeutic benefits of stem cells, we realize that extensive research and multidisciplinary efforts are required before such therapies become a reality. There is persistent translational gap between the study of stem cell biology and the application of stem cells and their progeny as therapeutic products for regenerative medicine. The CEGMR will mainly focus on the regenerative therapies for common genetic diseases in the kingdom. Another major area of interest is hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia stem cell research.

Goals:
Establishment of a strong stem cells research platform with excellent state-of-the art facilities for supporting specific stem cell research projects: this includes a high throughput cell analysis & sorting facility, an experimental animal facility, an animal and tissue irradiation unit etc.,
Generation, characterization of iPSC from somatic cells from a healthy donor and their differentiation to specific lineages for the treatment of certain disorders.
Use animal transplantation models (NOD/SCID or other mice strains) for addressing the safety issues associated with iPSC development and transplantation.
Isolate, characterize and produce hematopoietic stem cells as well as mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow (BM), peripheral blood (PB) and umbilical cord blood (UCB).
Research into new sources of HSC and mesenchymal stem cells such as placenta, iPSC etc, will be conducted by the team of HSC.
Conduct research in finding ways to expand HSC derived from UCB to a level that can form the basis for a single donor transplantation of UCB derived HSC in leukemia and other disorders.
The establishment of a cGMP facility to scale up the expansion of transplantable stem cells or their product.
