Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes and genetic information influences the action of a drug. Most drugs do not work effectively in all people and some also have undue side effects or toxicity. The variations people show in response to a drug, whether it is for efficacy or toxicity, can in part be explained by their own genetic makeups. Understanding the interactions of genes and drugs enables us to identify the most appropriate drug or dose for each individual which in turn contributes to minimize the risk of side effects or failure of drug treatment and may lead to better individualized treatment for each patient, resulting in improved safety and effectiveness. |

The major objective of the department of pharmacogenomics and Drug Discovery is to combine individual patient's genomic information to make drug and dose selection personalized leading to improved efficacy and reduced side effects. Additionally department also focuses on discovery of innovative therapeutics. Main research aims are as follows
-
To study genetic basis of variability in drug efficacy and toxicity, including study of genetic polymorphisms in drug targets, drug transporters and drug metabolizing enzymes in Saudi Arabian population. These investigations include study of the genetic influences on drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
- To discover novel therapeutics in the area of unmet medical needs.
