Operationally, HSC are best described as those cells capable of reconstituting the hematopoietic system of a recipient individual. HSC are the best examples of successful use of stem cells in regenerative medicine.
The overall purpose of this group is to employ most advanced technological tools in the isolation, production and expansion of the HSC for use in clinical settings, as well as perform basic and translational research in stem cells involvement in hematological tumors.
Goals:
Isolate, characterize and produce hematopoietic stem cells from bone marrow (BM), peripheral blood (PB) and umbilical cord blood (UCB). |
Research into new sources of HSC such as placenta, iPSC etc, will be conducted by the team of HSC. |
To develop stem and cell-based therapies aimed at combating blood-disorders such as sickle cell anemia, thrombotic disorders etc., |
Conduct research in finding ways to expand HSC derived from UCB to a level that can form the basis for a single donor transplantation of UCB derived HSC in leukemia and other disorders. |
