Arterial thrombosis, with its clinical manifestations such as Myocardial Infarction (MI), stroke, and peripheral artery disease; and Venous ThromboEmbolism (VTE), with its clinical manifestations such as pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs, are major causes of morbidity and mortality.

The DNA sequences of all known coagulation factors have been elucidated and many genetic alterations affecting the function of coagulation factors have been identified. More recently, the contributions of coagulation factor genes to a procoagulatory state have been explored. Till date, the prevalence of known genetic risk factors for thrombosis is not well established in the Saudi population. With the exception of a few reports, the actual frequencies of factor V Leiden, MTHFR and prothrombin mutations have not yet been established in the normal and patient population in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
