Abstract : Depression, anxiety and stress are considered the leading causes of disease burden. To estimate the prevalence of the depression, anxiety and stress among students and the difference between medical and non-medical students, we carried out this prevalence comparative study. This is an observational cross-sectional study conducted among medical and non-medical students of Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah, Saudi Arabia during the period of January 2019 – May 2019. The Faculty of education was selected randomly to represent the non-medical colleges. In order to measure the psychological co-morbidities, the depression, anxiety and stress scale – 21 items (DASS-21) with its validated Arabic version was used. A total of 465 undergraduate students participated in the survey. Of the total 465 students, 231 (49.68%) were medical students and 234 (50.32%) were non-medical students. The mean age of the medical and non-medical students was 21.67 (±1.56) and 21.23 (±2.34), respectively. Female constituted 57.42% of the total study participants. The prevalence rates of depression, anxiety and stress were high among undergraduate students (54%, 53% and 38%, respectively). Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that both depression and stress scores were not significantly different between medical and non-medical students; anxiety score, on the other hand, was significantly higher among non-medical students. Some potentials risk factors contributed to these psychological disturbances including family conflicts, female gender and history of psychiatric condition. To conclude, depression, anxiety and stress are highly prevalent among undergraduate students with a higher rate of anxiety among non-medical students.
