Abstract : Background: Substance abuse and withdrawal symptoms present a major health problem in many different countries and affect all levels of society with their possibly irreversible consequences that can affect personal relationships, educational opportunities, employment status, and general health and wellness. For this reason, nurses’ knowledge in this area is especially important. Aim: To assess the level of nurses’ knowledge of substance abuse and withdrawal symptoms among patients at Al-Amal Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A quantitative descriptive design was used for the current study. A convenience sample of 148 nurses voluntarily participated in the study. Setting: The study was conducted at Al-Amal Hospital in Jeddah. Tools: A self-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The tools were divided to two parts: 1) sociodemographic data and clinical experiences and 2) 23 items to assess the level of nurses’ knowledge of substance abuse and withdrawal symptoms. Results: The results indicated that nurses’ knowledge was at an average level (70.47% SD ± 14.27). However, their level of knowledge had a significant difference with their level of education and department in which they worked. Conclusion: The findings of the study showed that nurses working at Al-Amal Hospital possessed an average level of knowledge about substance abuse and withdrawal symptoms. Recommendation: The study results suggest that there is a need for regular training and in-service education to provide nurses with the required skills and advanced knowledge to screen substance abuse and withdrawal symptoms as well as a guideline for nursing management regarding detoxification and overdose. Keywords: nurses’ knowledge, substance abuse, withdrawal symptom.
