Abstract : A ternary system of mesoporous nanosized CuO/MgO/Al2O3 catalysts with different nominal compositions for Cu/Mg/Al mol ratios were synthesized form CuMgAl-layered double hydroxide calcined at 500oC for 8h. All the synthesized catalysts were characterized by XRF, TGA, XRD, SEM, XPS, CO2-TPD and BET-surface area gas analyzer. A catalytic test of Henry reaction utilizing nitromethane and various aldehyde derivates was carried out under conventional and ultrasonic irradiation methods. The obtained results revealed that all the synthesized catalysts showed catalytic efficiency towards the formation of only nitro-alcohol products in acceptable yield. Utilizing ultrasonic irradiation derived to achieve the reaction in very short reaction time with better %yield in comparison to the conventional classical method. CuO/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst (Cu/Mg/Al~ 1:1:1) was the superior active and selective candidate that provides high % yield and TOF for all the synthesized alcohols in short reaction time (few minutes). The re-use of the catalysts over six periods of time showed a robust nature that resist, deactivation thanks to its large surface area, nanosized active species and its mesoporous nature. The present scenario of ultrasonic assisted catalyzed organic synthesis could be a new trend for stereoselective Henry reactions.
