Abstract : Using the concept of the Hausdorff metric, Nadler (1960) established a multivalued version of the well known Banach Contraction Principle. Kada et al. (1996) introduced a notion of generalized distance namely, w-distance on a metric space and improved several type of results. Using the concept of w-distance, Suzuki and Takahashi (1996) established improved version of the Nadler Contraction Principle without using the Hausdorff metric. In this thesis, using the concept of w-distance we introduced some general concept for single-valued and multivalued maps satisfying some contractive type conditions. Using these notions, we prove some new results on the existence of fixed points and common fixed points for such maps in the setting of metric spaces . Our new results unify and generalize various known results including the very recent results due to Pathak and Shahzad (2009), Ciric (2008, 2009), Latif and Albar (2007, 2008), Klim and Wardowski (2007), Feng and Liu (2006), Chifu and Petrusel (2007), Ciric and Presic (2007), Suzuki and Takahashi (1996), Mizoguchi and Takahashi (1989), Kaneko(1988) and Jungck (1976).
