Abstract : The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing a great economic and industrial development. Construction sector is considered one of these industries that have been growing remarkably at all levels. This sector development involved the entry of many equipment and tools that might be considered a source of many occupational hazards (e.g. physical, mechanical and chemical hazards), which can cause accidents and serious injuries among the workers in this sector. Total percentage of accidents and injuries in the construction sector is more than 50% and chanaed according to the cause of accident, its type and injury. Due to the great concern of the country to provide safe work environment, it was important to conduct this study to identify the causes of accidents, their types and injuries and to suggest suitable means to eliminate or reduce the accidents in the construction sector. This study was conducted to identify the causes of accidents & injuries among workers in the construction sector in Saudi Arabia, in Jeddah, and to provide practical/effective means to reduce/eliminate the number of these accidents and injuries. Three-hundred construction workers were randomly selected from King Abdulaziz University and Jeddah University's Construction projects to participate by filling out a special questionnaire, which was developed by the researcher and translated into three languages (Arabic, English, Urdu). Results indicated that the main causes of accidents and injuries in construction sector are related to lack of awareness and experience;long shift hours; lack of continuous training; improper use of personal protective equipment by workers; machines and equipment defects; lack of proper/routine maintenance; being forced to do work that is above the level of the workers professional and physical abilities;and there are no written procedures at the facility belonging to the safety and health of workers. Therefore, this study recommended a number of solutions to eliminate or reduce the cases of accidents and injuries. These solutions include the presence of a safety officer responsible for awareness and education on safety; reduce working hours; not forcing the workers to do extra work in limited time; routine maintenance of machinery and equipment;continuous training and the proper use of personal protective equipment by workers. Finally, set up a dedicated budget and work on continuous development of safety in the work environment.
