Abstract : Treatment of PhCCl:NNHPh with base gave the nitrilium imide PhC+:NN-Ph in situ. 4-Aryl-1,3,8-triphenyl-7-oxa-1,2-diazaspiro[4.4]nona-2,8-dien-6-ones [I; R = (un)substituted Ph] were prepd. by the reaction of PhCCl:NNHPh with 3-(arylmethylene)-5-phenylfuran-2(3H)-ones in chloroform in the presence of triethylamine. Hydrolysis of I (R = Ph) gave 1,3,4-triphenyl-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylic acid (II) in 94% yield.
