Kidney cancer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia represents the third most common genitourinary malignancy. Histologically, clear cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common type in adults followed by papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma (pRCC) and chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma (chRCC). The tumor subtypes can be readily distinguished by their cytogenetic profile, for example, ccRCC is characterized by deletion of the distal 3p region including the Van Hippel Lindau (VHL) gene at 3p25. However, the role of other genes in ccRCC co-deleted with VHL is still not well understood. In our proposed study, we shall take advantage of the established array platform at the CEGMR that allows us to screen larger series of tumor cases using the latest high-density array technology.

We aim to investigate Copy Number Variations (CNV) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in different types of kidney tumors. SNP can be helpful to identify possible polymorphic markers conferring a certain risk for developing the disease.
