Dr. Ahmed completed his Ph.D. in human biology from the Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, in 2006. He performed his post-doctoral studies at the Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen and the Clinical Co-operative Group-Leukemia in Munich where he concentrated his efforts on carrying out functional screens using the mouse models to characterize hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) regulators involved in leukemia. At the CEGMR, Dr. Ahmed played a key role in the development of the Tissue Culture and Flow Cytometry Units. He is currently in-charge of the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Unit and the Molecular Biology Unit of the CEGMR.

One of Dr. Ahmed’s current research interests is studying the molecular regulation of normal and malignant hematopoiesis and HSC self-renewal with the hope to identify underlying processes that lead to leukemic transformation and progression. Projects in Dr. Ahmed’s group focus on identification and characterization of candidate leukemic stem cell (LSC) in hematopoietic malignancies and therapeutic targeting of the leukemic cells that drive human leukemia.

Projects in Dr. Ahmed’s research group include stem cell and angiogenesis studies in diabetes and leukemia. He has currently two research grants supported by the KACST.

Dr. Ahmed is currently a member of several scientific societies such as: International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), European Hematology Association (EHA) and ISEH - Society for Hematology and Stem Cells.
