Scientific Advances at the CEGMR Gain Mention in the National Press

Okaz Newspaper published an article about CEGMR ( Center of Excellence in Genomic Research ) recently in its issue of Wednesday 9/6/2010 reporting the advances achieved by the CEGMR in its Scientific Research. And this is the text of article:
" A Saudi national medical team from the Center of Excellence in Genomic Medicine Research has developed the concept of a “Saudi Genetic Mutation Array Chip” in collaboration with the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, King Abdulaziz University. This chip is bound to provide a solution to many of the problems faced by diagnostic laboratories in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This will be achieved through the correct and efficient diagnosis of several chronic diseases and expediting medical discovery in the Kingdom, the Arab world and many other countries.

The research team is headed by Dr. Mohammed Hussein Al-Qahtani and includes Dr. Adel Abuzenadah, Dr. Adeel Chaudhary and Dr. Mamdooh Gari. This team has managed to pinpoint the DNA sequences of the mutations that cause several hematological disorders common to the region. The identified sequences will be printed onto a nanochip to provide an accurate diagnostic tool for such disorders.
Dr. Al-Qahtani added “This chip will be a significant leap forward for the diagnosis of several hereditary and infectious diseases. This chip could be used in premarital screening programs and also help to facilitate population-wide screening. The health sector will benefit greatly by diagnosing such diseases early”. Dr. Al-Qahtani mentioned that his team has designed the gene chip for the diagnosis of Thalassemia a condition common in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The search is ongoing to find a commercial partner who will help in the manufacture and marketing of the chip in the Kingdom and the Arab countries in the near future." Mohammed Dawood - Jeddah
