I am a Pharmaceutical scientist with extensive industrial research experience of 16 years in the field of drug discovery and development. I did my Ph.D. from Central Drug Research Institute which is a premier drug research institute in India. During my Ph.D I demonstrated that Plasmodium cynomolgi, a simian malaria parasite, can be maintained in long term in vitro cultures and antigen prepared from such cultures can be employed for seroepidemiology of Plasmodium vivax malaria and this culture platform can be successfully employed for the screening of large number of antimalarial compounds directed against blood stages of malaria parasite. After completing my Ph.D I Joined Wockhardt Limited, a leading research based Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Company in India, where I was involved in the discovery of three novel antibiotics which are currently undergoing clinical trials in USA and India. These new antibiotics will address the unmet medical need in the area of skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory and urinary tract infections especially those caused by multidrug resistant pathogens in both community and hospitals. I have my name attached to 13 patents involving novel inventions. These patents have been awarded by US, EU and South African patent agencies.
Currently I am working as a coordinator of ‘Pharmacogenomics and Drug discovery’ at CEGMR. My current research interests are to discover and develop novel compounds for the treatment of cancer and infectious diseases utilizing natural, synthetic and nanotechnology based approaches.
